The Shadow in the Static
For forty years, the broadcast station at Blackwood Peak sent out nothing but white noise. People called it "The Ghost Frequency." But when a young radio enthusiast decodes a hidden signal within the static, he realizes the transmission isn't coming from a broken transmitter—it's a real-time audio feed from a house that was demolished in 1986. And someone inside is screaming for help.
Arthur loved the lonely hum of shortwave radio. While others scrolled through social media, he hunted for "Number Stations" and atmospheric anomalies. One rainy Tuesday, he stumbled upon 99.7: The Blackwood Static. It was supposed to be dead air, a lingering relic of a station that burned down decades ago.
But as Arthur adjusted his vintage receiver, the static cleared. For a split second, he heard the distinct clink of a teacup and the muffled sound of a news report—about the Challenger shuttle disaster. He froze. That happened forty years ago.
The signal grew stronger. He heard a woman’s voice, humming a lullaby. It was intimate, domestic, and utterly impossible. He began recording, his hands shaking. As he analyzed the audio, he realized the "transmission" wasn't a loop. It was live. When he tapped his desk, he heard the woman in the radio pause and ask, "Is someone there?"
Arthur’s heart hammered against his ribs. He began to communicate with the voice from 1986. Her name was Clara. She was trapped in her basement, hiding from "the man with the shadow face." Arthur realized he was listening to the final moments of a cold case that had haunted the town for generations.
The closer he got to the truth, the more the static began to bleed into his own home. He started seeing the shadow face in his own hallway, a glitch in reality that shouldn't exist. He had to choose: turn off the radio and let Clara die in the past, or keep listening and bring the shadow into his present.
